Homemade paella

3 Oct

When I am eating at my girlfriends parents’ place I know I will not leave hungry. Some time ago they made this delicious paella. With a bright afternoon sun shining on our heads, it was just like I was back in Spain. It was made with original Spanish fideua, filled with vegetables and all kinds of seafood.

Frekedel Djagung from Toko Joyce

Sometimes in between lectures, I need to have a quick snack. And when you are in Amsterdam, you have loads of choices for a quick bite. The other day I went to Toko Joyce, a toko (shop) in the centre of Amsterdam. Their frekedel djagung is described on their menu as a “spicy, vegetarian corn fritter”. After ordering it, they put it in the microwave to heat it up. After it is burning hot, you can take it with you to sit outside near a canal or sit in the toko. I cannot recall if the fritter itself was spicy, because I took every bite with the delicious sambal manis (sweet sambal) with it!

Spaghetti at McDonalds in Jakarta

Why oh why would anybody ever eat spaghetti in a McDonalds, let alone in Indonesia where good food is waiting for you at every corner? Well, because I am always curious with food. And since it was really cheap, what could go wrong? To be honest though, I wouldn’t recommend this spaghetti to anybody. At least not if you are expecting something that does not taste like prefabricated spaghetti with a tiny bit of sauce on top. But if that is what you expect, and if you don’t have more than fifty euro cents to spend, this is your thing. Otherwise, don’t take the spaghetti and just stick with the French fries. Or if you are in Indonesia, get some sate kambing.

McFlurry Warna Warni

Not the best taken picture, I agree. But what you see above is one of the two Indonesian variations on the McFlurry. This one is the one that is the most similar to the McFlurry with M&M’s. The name McFlurry Warna Warni means as much as “colourful Mcflurry”. The name is derived from the colourful chocolate “candies” that they mix with vanilla ice.

Chicken McD

One of the things I tend to do, wherever I am on vacation, is pop into a McDonalds and see what kind of things they have on the menu. Per country the menu differs slightly and Indonesia was not an exception. What was the thing that caught my eye? Chicken McD a.k.a. fried chicken! I had to have some and of course I had. It tasted just as you would expect: tasty, crispy and slightly unhealthy. The best part about McDonalds in Indonesia is that they offer unlimited sambal so you could dip your chicken in it endlessly.

Friet from Frietsteeg

Just looking at the picture above makes me hungry again! These friet (fries) are the best in Amsterdam. At least, the best I have tasted so far.

Not long ago R-s and I walked through Amsterdam looking for some fries. We walked to a shop that we wanted to try earlier, but once again it was closed. So we strolled on through the beautiful city of Amsterdam until the smell of freshly fried fries came into our noses. At the Frietsteeg, every day they chop up some fresh potatoes and fry them to perfect crunchiness. With that you have to choice of twenty-two (!) different sauces. The one you see above is samoerai sauce: a combination of mayonnaise and sambal. With or without a huge amount of sauce, these fries are incredibly delicious!

I am not that much of a sweet tooth, but recently I ate this small apple crumble pie and to be honest, it was good! I can’t remember where it was bought, but it was from a bakery.
